Vacation purchase – beware! Species protection knows no borders

Importing gifts and souvenirs to the EU that violate the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species is prohibited, because not only the uncontrolled trade with wild plant and animal species, including parts of them, but also the importing of souvenirs can threaten animal and plant species. Customs officials confiscate the affected souvenirs immediately. The vacation souvenirs most often confiscated are alligator and crocodile products as well as watchbands made of snake or lizard skins and the corresponding leather. Souvenirs made of illegal reptile leathers involve not only trouble for the vacationer but could also mean the payment of a fine or penalty.
